MetaTags

I've seen many articles on the 'death of the metatag' and it me smile. Infact I smile whenever I see or hear anything that confuses people about SEO, beacuse the more confused they are, the more they need people like me!

Let me explain why meta tags are important and how they work with other elements of your site to help promote your keywords.

<Title>

Firstly, the title tag isn't really a meta tag, but as it's placed in the head part of your document, it is sometimes considered part of the meta data. This is THE most important part of your webpage. Why? This is the first thing that the search engines will 'read' when they come to your site. If all your titles are identical, then search engines will consider your site to be repetitive and of little importance. Also, this is usually the line of text which is used as the link to your site from search results. Your keywords for that page must be included in the title. Some search engines will rank the title tag higher than any other single element on your site.

<meta keywords

Keywords are of lesser importance to the ranking of your site. But they are useful as long as they are relevant to the text on your page and should help the search engines identify what your page is about.

<meta description

I love this tag! You'll probably have a header and some navigation on your site. This information comes at the top and makes it difficult for the search engines to display a nice description of your site in the listings.
