Domain names and extensions

Once you have established your targeted ausdience and keywords you can now think about which domain name to use.

The domain name directly effects how a website is ranked.

The aspects of the domain name that the search engines will look at are:

Length of time domain name has been registered, the longer the better as far as domain name trust.

Has the domain name's registered owner changed recently?

The extension of the domain, ie .com has a higher value than a .info or .biz. A .co.uk been seen as more relevant to a UK audience (people searching from the Uk or from google.co.uk).

The locality of the IP address that the domain name is hosted on.

The admin contact details.

The Google Page rank of the page (the Google page rank takes into consideration some of the above + more)

If you haven't already bought a domain name, great! Although you won't have the history of an older domain, you will have the advantage that you can tailor it exactly to your chosen keywords.

Your domain name should be:

  1. Memorable
  2. Relavant
  3. Targeted

If you are going for a specific region, you should use the domain with the relevant extension. The search engines are continually localising search results.
